  • Description

PILGRIMS FROM ALL OVER INDIA TOOK PART IN A FAIR IN KURUKSHETRA HELD YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) ON THE OCCASION OF THE ECLIPSE OF THE SUN.

ACCORDING TO HINDU MYTHOLOGY, THE HOLY MEN AND GODS OF THE HINDU FAITH COME TO THE BANKS OF THE KURUKSHETRA DURING A SOLAR ECLIPSE. HINDU PILGRIMS FEEL, THEREFORE, THAT IT IS IMPORTANT FOR THEM TO BATHE IN THE WATERS OF THE RIVER DURING THE PERIOD OF AN ECLIPSE.

THE FAIR ORIGINATED, ACCORDING TO LEGEND, AS THE RESULT OF A WAR BETWEEN THE GODS AND THE DEMONS. LORD VISHNU, THE HIGHEST OF THE GODS, SEEING THE SUPERIORITY OF THE DEMONS, ORDERED THE GODDESS INDRA TO DISTRIBUTE A NECTAR, AMRIT, TO THE GODS. THE NECTAR WOULD ENABLE THEM TO ATTAIN IMMORTALITY. WHILE INDRA WAS CARRYING THE NECTAR, A FEW DROPS FROM THE POT FELL AT KURUKSHETRA. AS SOON AS THE NEWS OF THIS SPREAD, ALL LIVING THINGS SPED TO KURUKSHETRA TO OBTAIN SOME OF THE NECTAR.

DURING THE FAIR, PILGRIMS PASSED THROUGH THE TEMPLE TO TAKE THEIR HOLY BATHS. THERE WERE A NUMBER OF HOLY MEN - CALLED SADUS - INVOLVED IN THE CEREMONY. THE SADUS THEN TOOK PART IN THEIR OWN PROCESSION TO THE WATER DURING THE ECLIPSE. THERE WERE IMAGES OF LORD VISHNU AND THE GODDESS KALI CARRIED DURING THE COURSE OF THE FAIR.
