EIGHTEEN PEOPLE WERE INJURED IN ISTANBUL TODAY (TUESDAY) AS POLICE AND STUDENTS CLASHED DURING THE SECOND DAY OF PROTEST DEMONSTRATIONS AGAINST THE VISIT OF THE UNITED STATES SIXTH FLEET.

THE MAIN CLASHES OCCURRED DURING A THOUSAND STRONG STUDENT MARCH STARTING AT ISTANBUL UNIVERSITY. RIOT POLICE, REINFORCED BY SOLDIERS FROM THE ISTANBUL GARRISON, SEALED OFF ALL PRINCIPAL STREETS ALONG THE MARCH ROUTE.

AT A PRESS CONFERENCE AT THE ATATURK MONUMENT IN VICTORY SQUARE, ONE OF THE STUDENT LEADERS YESTERDAY THREATENED SUICIDE BY FIRE UNLESS THE WARSHIPS LEFT WITHIN FORTY-EIGHT HOURS.

THE U.S. AIRCRAFT CARRIER FORRESTAL AND FIVE DESTROYERS ARRIVED AT ISTANBUL ON MONDAY FOR A FIVE DAY VISIT. A U.S. NAVY SPOKESMAN CALLED THE VISIT ROUTINE AND SAID THAT IT WAS IN LINE WITH A NAVY POLICY OF CALLING AT TURKISH PORTS TWICE A YEAR.
