  • Description

MOST OF FRANCE'S 200,000 COAL MINERS STREAMED BACK TO WORK TODAY (FRIDAY) AFTER A FIVE-WEEK WAGE STRIKE, BUT IN THE NORTH DIE-HARD STRIKERS PICKETED THE MINES AND SEVERAL PITS WERE IDLE.

THERE WAS A COMPLETE RESUMPTION OF WORK AT MERLEBACH, AND ELSEWHERE IN THE LORRAINE BASIN, AND IN CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN FRANCE. SOME MINERS MARCHED BACK TO THE PITHEADS LED BY BRASS BANDS.

BUT AT LENS, AND OTHER NORTHERN MINING TOWNS, MORE THAN A QUARTER OF THE MINERS STAYED AWAY FROM WORK. ANGRY ARGUMENTS BETWEEN PICKETS AND MINERS, INCLUDING UNION LEADERS, BROKE OUT AT THE PITHEADS AND MANY OF THE MEN DUE TO RETURN TO WORK UNDER YESTERDAY'S NATIONAL STRIKE SETTLEMENT WENT HOME AGAIN.

OBSERVERS SAID THAT EVEN MANY OF THOSE TRUDGING BACK TO THE PITS WERE BITTER AND DISAPPOINTED BY UNION ACCEPTANCE OF THE TERMS - A PAY INCREASE BY INSTALMENTS, A BACK-TO-WORK WAGE ADVANCE, AND A FOURTH WEEK'S HOLIDAY A YEAR.

WITH TALKS BETWEEN THE FRENCH ELECTRICITY AND GAS BOARDS AND THE UNIONS CONTINUING, THE ONLY NOTABLE STRIKE TODAY WAS BY STATE RADIO AND TELEVISION EMPLOYEES. PROGRAMMES WERE REDUCED TO MUSIC ON ALL WAVELENGTHS, WITH OCCASIONAL NEWS BULLETINS.
