  • Description

President Eisenhower stood by as President Charles de Gaulle laid a floral wreath at the base of the statue of the Marquis de Lafayette, Washington, Apr 23. A tribute to the French General who played an active role in the American War of Independence. This was the first day of the President's visit to America.

The French President and President Eisenhower walked through a lane of 200 troops from the White House across Pennsylvania Avenue. Several thousand spectators watched the ceremony, as de Gaulle - aided by Sgt. William Rigsby - carried a wreath of red and white carnations and blue iris to the foot of the bronze statue.

Within ten minutes the ceremony was over. Bands played the two national anthems, and soldiers paraded the colours wearing colourful Independence War uniforms.
