SYNOPSIS: At a solemn prayer meeting in New Delhi on Saturday, India's President Mr. V.V. Giri and Vice President Mr. Pathak joined their countrymen in commemorating the 102nd anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi.
Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi was also present at the ceremony. She placed rose petals on the memorial at the Raj Ghat....the spot where the Mahatma was cremated.
Mrs. Gandhi stood in silence before the memorial, paying her respects to one of India's most cherished memories. Mahatma Gandhi, who preached a life-long creed of non-violence while working for Indian independence, was shot dead by a Hindu fanatic in 1948.
From early in the morning, hundreds of Indians, barefooted, came to the Raj Ghat to file past the memorial. Other prayer meetings were held elsewhere throughout the country, in memory of the "Father of the Indian Nation."
