  • Description

FRANCE OVERCAME THE HOODOO WHICH HAS ALWAYS MARKED THEIR APPEARANCES AT THE TWICKENHAM GROUND NEAR LONDON WHEN THEY SCORED A WELL-EARNED 16-12 VICTORY OVER ENGLAND TODAY (SATURDAY).

IT WAS THE FIRST TIME FRANCE HAD WON AT TWICKENHAM FOR 12 YEARS, AND ONLY THEIR THIRD EVER THERE. THE FRENCH CONTINGENT IN THE CROWD WERE DELIGHTED BY THE STRONG, OPEN THREEQUARTER PLAY BY THEIR TEAM, AND A GREAT CHEER WENT UP AS THE FINAL WHISTLE BLEW.

BUT ENGLAND WERE BY NO MEANS OVERSHADOWED, AND LED BY THEIR RECENTLY APPOINTED CAPTAIN, COVENTRY'S PHIL JUDD, THEY HURLED COURAGE AND DETERMINATION AGAINST THE GAELIC INVENTION.

THE FRENCH LED 13-9 AT HALF TIME, AND HAD THE BETTER THREEQUARTER LINE. THEY COMBINED MORE EFFECTIVELY IN THE TENSELY CONTESTED MATCH AND GOT OFF TO A DREAM START WHEN THEIR 21 YEAR-OLD CENTRE CLAUDE DOURTHE SNATCHED A WONDERFUL TRY IN THE FIRST MINUTE.

IN FACT, ALL THE SCORING CAME IN THE FIRST 47 MINUTES. FOLLOWING DOURTHE'S TRY, GUY CAMBERABERO CONVERTED AND WAS ALSO SUCCESSFUL WHEN BERNARD DUPRAT SCORED THE SECOND TRY FOR FRANCE.

GUY CAMBERABERO ALSO DROPPED A GOAL AND KICKED A PENALTY. HIS GREAT KICKING WAS MATCHED BY ENGLAND'S ROGER HOSEN, WHO KICKED THREE PENALTIES. THE OTHER ENGLISH SCORER WAS JOHN FINLAN, WHO DROPPED A GOAL.
