And the equivalent of Chicago within an archaeological concept would only be say a solid of two or three cubic kilometres. So it would really be a miniaturisation of Chicago that we are talking about.

    Background: American architect Paolo Saleri believes that major cities must redevelop in highly concentrated community areas. Otherwise, he says, the cities are going to die. He has illustrated his concept by building models for the redevelopment of Chicago -- involving giant 300-storey structures.

    In the models -- currently on display at Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art -- the structures designed by Saleri dwarf the existing 100-storey John Hancock centre. These giant buildings are called arcologies. If they were built, Saleri believes Chicago's 3 1/2 million residents could be gathered into three or four structures each covering several square miles. He was asked about the need for this kind of development:
