  • Description

Shouts of "Africa" broke from a non-white crowd gathered at Johannesburg's African Alexandra township, Mar 23, as they listened to speeches against the South African Government's apartheid policy and the Pass Law which led to violent clashes between African demonstrators and police at Sharpeville and Langa, Mar. 21.

Police kept watch and armoured cars patrolled African townships and locations in many parts of the Union, where similar meetings were held by African leaders, protesting against security actions and urging people to stay away from work.

Groups of Africans continued to press on with the pass book boycott called by the Pan-Africanist Congress, assembling outside police stations and demanding to be arrested for not carrying identity cards.

South African Premier, Dr Verwoerd, faced by strong international criticism of the recent incidents, announced Mar 23 that two Judges would appointed as one-man commissions to enquire into the clashes at Sharpeville and Langa, where 70 Africans were killed and over 180 injured. The following day he banned both the African National Congress and the Pan-Africanist Congress, as well as public meetings of all races, with the exception of Church services and other approved functions.

Meanwhile, all further leave for the South African and defence forces has been cancelled.
