  • Description

QUEUES OF MOTORISTS WAITING TO EDGE UP TO THE FAMILIAR ISLAND OF PUMPS AT CONVENTIONAL PETROL STATIONS WILL BE ABOLISHED BY A NEW STATION DESIGN AIMED AT PROVIDING SPACE FOR MORE CARS AND QUICKER SERVICE, PREPARED BY A MANUFACTURER OF PETROLEUM EQUIPMENT IN LONDON, U.K.

THE DESIGN, SHOWN FOR THE FIRST TIME ON JANUARY 22, VIRTUALLY ELIMINATES THE IDEA OF THE CENTRE ISLAND, AND INTRODUCES SMALLER DISPENSERS SET UP IN VARIOUS PARTS OF THE DRIVE-IN AREA. THE DISPENSERS WILL BE ABLE TO PROVIDE FROM A SINGLE POINT THREE GRADES OF SPIRIT. NEAR-BY, INDICATORS MOUNTED ON PILLARS SHOW THE CUSTOMER THE GRADE SELECTED, PRICE PER GALLON, QUANTITY SUPPLIED AND TOTAL SUM PAYABLE.

THIS SCHEME, CALLED BY THE MANUFACTURERS "SERVICE IN SPACE", IS DEMONSTRATED BY USING MODELS AND A MOCK-UP SERVICE STATION AT THE COMPANY'S WORKS AT STREATHAM, SOUTH LONDON. THERE, RAPID SERVICE WAS GIVEN TO FOUR VEHICLES AT A TIME IN AN OPEN SITE OF ONLY 63 FEET BY 48 FEET, APPROXIMATELY HALF THE USUAL AREA FOR A CONVENTIONAL STATION OFFERING THE SAME FACILITIES.
