    SLATE INFORMATION

Background: French President Francois Mitterand returned to France on Friday (5 March) after a three-day visit to Israel, during which he urged Israeli acceptance of the Palestinians' right to form a separate state in the Middle East. The French leader spent Thursday (4 March) at the ancient Crusader site of Acre. From there, he flew by helicopter to Tel Aviv for a reception with the city's French community, before leaving for Paris. In Beirut, the Lebanese capital, a spokesman for the Palestine Liberation Organisation, Yasser Abd Rabbo, commented on President Mitterrand's visit. Mr. Abd Rabbo, deputy leader of a radical guerrilla group within the PLO, and the organisation's information department chief, described the French President's speech, calling for recognition for a Palestinian state, as "a big step backwards".
