  • Description

Rod Laver and Ken Rosewall played great tennis today (Saturday) to reach the final of the first World Professional Lawn Tennis championships at Wimbledon.

The two Australians will meet for the GBP3,000 sterling first-prize money - the biggest in tennis - on the Centre Court next Monday (August 28).

Rosewall had little trouble in disposing of his former Australian Davis Cup Partner, Lew Hoad. He won 6-2, 6-2 in three quarters of an hour. laver needed only a few extra minutes to beat the elegant Spaniard, Andres Gimeno, 6-3, 6-4.

It was the first Wimbledon Centre Court meeting in eleven years for Hoad and Rosewall - they last met in the 1956 Final which Hoad won in four sets. But it was a different story today with Rosewall's speed and accuracy quickly wearing down the power game of Hoad.

The other semi-final saw Rod Laver in peak form. His return of service and anticipation had the large crowd gasping. Gimeno played well but was just unlucky to meet Laver on one of those days when the little Australian couldn't make a mistake.
