  • Description

Its a great day for the Irish - in New York, where the traditional St Patricks Day parade occupied the whole of fifth avenue from 42nd street, up into the Central Park area up above 96th Street.

The crowd was assessed at a million, despite the bitterly cold and rainy weather, and over 120,000 marchers took part. The Police department - traditionally staffed by a large percentage of Irishmen, had nearly 3,000 police on duty (including 27 captains). All traffic was blocked off between sixth avenue and Madison Avenue.

The main reviewing stand, manned by Governor Rockefeller and Mayor Wagner, was at 64th Street along the side of Central Park. Cardinal Spellman gave his blessing to the parade from the steps of St. Patrick's Cathedral.

Also seen on this Visnews film are the towering heights of Rockefeller Plaza, and the start point near the New York Central Public Library on 42nd Street.
