Seventy one Dutch bartenders set out to prove that they were the best in the Netherlands, in Amsterdam, today. It was an occasion sponsored by the Dutch Bartenders' Club that drew them all together around an enormous bar which contained practically every known ingredient (and some unheard of) for mixing cocktails.
There are thousands of cocktail recipes --but every good barman has his own 'special'..and very few of them will divulge the 'magic content' which gives their own specialty that extra something.
Nevertheless there's nothing much they can hide from the panel of experts who judge this contest:- a delicate sniff, a gentle smacking of the lips, and few secrets remain.
The panel of judges comprises 160 experts! And the reason for this is that the Club argues no-one is competent to pass an opinion on more than four cocktails!!
This year's winner, Mr. Van Duyn received a silver goblet..and a kiss from Corinne Rottschaefer - Miss Europe of 1957. He also qualifies to enter the World Championships in Brussels next year.
