  • Description

Thirty people were killed when flash floods hit the commercial town of Bulandshahr in the sate of Uttar Pradesh, India, on Tuesday (9 September).

An unprecedented 23??? inches (58.4 centimetres) of rain f???ll in 16 hours leaving many areas of Uttar Pradesh underwater, and creating havoc in Bulandshahr .. the town that was once considered invulnerable to floods because of its elevation.

Of the 30 lives lost, 12 were victims of house collapses. Six of them were crushed while asleep.

It's estimated that half Bulandshahr's 80,000 population was affected by the floods. A float of army and civilian boats rescued people from roof tops and high ground.

Now the town is receiving refugees from outlying areas, who have been left homeless in the wake of the floods. The roads into Bulandshahr are crowded with families and cattle moving to seek accommodation and food.

Rich farmlands are now lakes and the magnitude of the flood is on a scale experienced by the north-east Indian city of Patna recently.

Bulandshahr is now isolated except for radio and air links. However, relief officers believe they have enough medical supplies and food to last another week.

But the town is still facing disaster. With the weather showing no signs of letting up and the swollen Kali Nadi river rising menacingly, army personnel in the area fear the worst may be still yet to come.

Army, police and civilian volunteers are working around the clock to re-enforce flood banks and sand-bagging.
