  • Description

SWISS CHAMPION LUIGI TAVERI (No. 11), RIDING A HONDA, WON THE LIGHTWEIGHT TT (125 c.c.) ON THE ISLE OF MAN TODAY (WEDNESDAY) AT A RECORD AVERAGE SPEED OF 92.14 MILES AN HOUR (148.28 K.P.H.). IN A THRILLING FINISH HE BEAT SOUTHERN RHODESIA'S JIM REDMAN (No. 4) -- ALSO ON A HONDA -- BY THREE SECONDS.

THE RACE HAD LOOKED LIKE GOING ALL REDMAN'S WAY. HE WAS SOON OUT ON HIS OWN AND AT THE END OF TWO LAPS LED TAVERI BY THREE SECONDS.

REDMAN WAS HOPING TO EQUAL MIKE HAILWOOD'S FEAT THREE YEARS AGO OF WINNING THREE TITLES AT ONE MEETING. BUT TAVERI PUT IN A MAGNIFICENT LAST LAP AND SNATCHED THE RACE FROM THE RHODESIAN. IRELAND'S RALPH BRYANS (No. 5) - ON YET ANOTHER HONDA --- WAS THIRD.

LATER REDMAN (No. 17) TOOK THE JUNIOR TOURIST TROPHY (350 c.c.) TO COMPLETE THE 250 AND 350 c.c. "DOUBLE" FOR THE SECOND SUCCESSIVE YEAR. HE WON THE 250 c.c. EVENT LAST MONDAY.

THE BRILLIANT RHODESIA RIDER LED ALMOST FROM THE START ON HIS HONDA TO WIN EASILY WITH AN AVERAGE SPEED OF 98.50 MILES PER HOUR (158.51 K.P.H.). HE WON BY ABOUT EIGHT MILES (12.8 KILOMETRES) FROM BRITAIN'S PHIL READ (No. 14) ON AN ???.J.S. MIKE DUFF OF CANADA (No. 5), ALSO ON AN A.J.S., WAS THIRD.

HONDA'S LIST OF VICTORIES IN THESE INTERNATIONAL TOURIST TROPHY RACES HAS TURNED THE TABLES ON THEIR JAPANESE TWO-STROKE CONQUERORS OF LAST YEAR, THE SUZUKIS, WHICH FINISHED IN THE TOP THREE PLACES IN 1963.
