    AMERICAN FORD CARS TODAY (SUNDAY) TOOK THE FIRST THREE PLACINGS IN THE 24-HOUR CONTINENTAL ROAD RACE AT DAYTONA BEACH, AT FLORIDA.

    FIRST PLACE WAS TAKEN BY THE AMERICAN CREW OF KEN MILES AND FLOYD RUBY. ANOTHER AMERICAN TEAM, DAN GURNEY AND JERRY BRAND WERE SECOND AND WALTER HANGSEN AND MARK DONAHUE WERE THIRD. ALL THREE TEAMS DROVE FORD MARK TWO'S.

    MILES AND RUBY COMPLETED 677 LAPS, OR 2,579 MILES, IN THE TWENTY-FOUR HOURS. AT THE HALF WAY STAGE THEIR AVERAGE SPEED WAS OVER 108 MILES AN HOUR.

    IN THE LATER STAGES OF THE EVENT TODAY A BATTLE DEVELOPED BETWEEN THE HANGSEN-DONOHUE FORD TEAM AND THE FERRARI 365 DRIVEN BY PEDRO RODRIGUEZ, OF MEXICO, AND MARIO ANDRETTI, OF THE UNITED STATES. THE FERRARI FINISHED IN THE FOURTH PLACE, AFTER THE FORD CAR COMPLETED FOUR LAPS AHEAD.

    THREE PORSCHE 904'S TOOK THE FIRST THREE PLACES IN THE SPORTS CAR CLASS. THE GRAND TURISMO CLASS WAS WON BY AN AMERICAN FORD LE MANS, WITH A CORVETTE SECOND AND A PORSCHE 911 THIRD.

    THE LATER STAGES OF THE RACE WERE CONDUCTED IN FREEZING CONDITIONS. THE TEMPERATURE FELL TO 21 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT (???-5 DEGREES CENTIGRADE), AND EVEN THE COMPUTER SUPPLYING HOURLY PLACINGS FROZE UP.
