Background: Spain's new Prime Minister, replacing the assassinated Admiral ???uis Carrero Blanco, is to be a stern advocate of law and order -- 65-year-old Senor Carlos Aries Wavarro, a conservative who served as Public Prosecutor of General Franco's enemies during and after the Spanish Civil War.
General Franco's nomination of Senor Arias Navarro to the post on Saturday (December 29) is interpreted as strengthening the conservative element in the Spanish government.
Throughout his career, Senor Arias Navarro has been regarded by Spain's outlawed left-wing opposition an implacable opponent of attempts at liberalisation.
Last June, following Admiral Carrero Blanco's appointment as prime Minister, Senor Aries Navarro was appointed Interior Minister -- responsible for Spain's police forces and all internal security.
After he had been named as the new Prime Minister, Senor Aries Navarro was filmed in the garden of his home just outside Madrid and leaving a nearby church following a Sunday service -- where there was a notable lack of security, despite the recent attack on Admiral Carrero Blanco, also outside a church.
