    Background: The Canadian challenge in the ladies section of the European Skiing Championships at Bad Gastein, Austria, on February 8th, when Lucie Wheeler of Canada won the Giant Slalom.

    Run over a 1.65 Km course and through 55 gates, the course presented a formidable task and of the 42 starters, 36 reached the end of the run.

    Completing the course in 1 min 54.6 secs, Lucile Wheeler claimed a narrow victory over Sally Deaver of the United States whose final time was 1.55.1, with Frieda Danzer of Switzerland third in 1.55.4.

    Watching this stage of the championship was the President of Austria, Dr. Adolf Scharf, and the leading contender for the men's title, Tony Sailer.

    At the end of this stage in the competition, Frieda Denzer (Switzerland) led with 3.80 points; second was Lucille Wheeler with 4.33, and Putzi Frandl (Austria) was third with 6.12.

    From Great Britain, Susan Holmes finished 19th in 2.05.1.
