  • Description

President De Gaulle had another busy day, Feb 27, as he continued his four-day tour of Southern France, to assess his personal popularity after events in Algeria, and to gauge the temper of French farmers, displeased with government agricultural policy.

At Limoux the President addressed a large crowd, but local wine-growers refused to attend a reception in his honour. They object to heavy taxation and anti-alcoholic propaganda.

At Narbonne uranium refinery De Gaulle met workers and inspected machinery. He is very interested in France's atomic industry and recently visited the big plant at Saclay near Paris.

Other stops were made at Ales, Pichegu - where he examined the power-station, and Le Vigan where he spoke of "the totalitarian threat which divides the world into two camps" and which made it necessary for France to have nuclear weapons.

The tour of Southern France is the first of a series the President wishes to make throughout the entire country.
