  • Description

Boxing....and the World Boxing Council (W.B.C.) champion Miguel Canto of Mexico has lost his world flyweight title after a unanimous points verdict to challenger, Park Chan-Hee from South Korea. The large crowd in Kudok Stadium in Pusan, South Korea on Sunday (18 March) was jubilant to see their countryman take the world crown. The defeat was only Canto's fourth in ten years of professional boxing.

SYNOPSIS: Park Chan-Hee, in the white shorts, entered the ring with the experts giving him little chance of becoming world champion.

As the earlier rounds show, it was close...far closer than the ages and experience of the two fighters. Canto is thirty-one, a veteran of sixty-nine fights, fourteen of them defending his world title. Park is twenty-two and undefeated in his ten bouts since turning professional twenty months ago. When the fight was arranged,Park said he would knock out the 'old man' by the fifth round. but local boxing officials doubted he could even go the distance, because Canto is resilient and renowned for his stamina. But Park was soon beginning to dominate the champion with a flurry of lefts and rights.

The big crowd filling Kudok stadium became frenzied as Park kept punching like a world champion. One of Canto's counter-punches opened a cut over the Korean's right eye in the third round, but Park said he then became confident of winning. By the eleventh, Canto's face was badly marked, with his left eye almost closed.

After throwing everything he had, Park tired, and took a lot of punishment in the last round, but Canto's rally was too late.

The Mexican judge had Park only one point ahead, but the American and Korean judges finished with bigger margins for the new champion.
