Background: Soccer...and Greece and Austria met each other in a friendly match in Athens on Wednesday (15 February). The fixture was arranged as part of Austria's World Cub build-up, and they came away with a one-all draw.
SYNOPSIS: Austria-playing from left to right in the dark shirts-kicked off. They soon found the Greeks strong in midfield and were under some early pressure. The Austrians were without some of their more experienced men as several new players were given a pre-World Cup try-out, but they settled down well.
The austrians soon showed themselves to be the more skilful...but it was the Greeks who made the first chance. After a good run down the right wing, followed by a cross to the far post Galakos stabbed the ball home to put them one up three minutes before half-time.
In the second half the Greeks piled on more pressure hoping to increase their lead. Again it was a move down the wing which caught the Austrian defence square...poor handling by the goal keeper Baumgardier caused some tense moments, and after one or two half-chances the ball was eventually cleared.
In the sixtieth minute the Austrians drew level...with number nine Krancl getting the goal.
Though there were no more goals, the remainder of the match provided the crowd with some entertaining football as both teams went close. The austrians travel to Argentina later this year for the 1978 World Cup finals. And having been drawn in group three, they face tough opposition from Brazil, Spain and Sweden.
