  • Description

The Unites Nations General Assembly postponed scheduled debate on Monday (25 November) to pay tribute to former Secretary-General U Thant, who died earlier in the day.

The 65-year-old former Burmese Ambassador to the United Nations became the United Nations third Secretary-General in 1961 and held the post for 10 years. He died of cancer at New York's Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Centre.

The General Assembly was to have debated the question of the representation of the Khmer Republic. Instead-members heard obituary massages and observed a one-minute silence.

President of the Assemblu, Abdul Aziz Bouteflika of Algeria, read a message in French. Then, the Unites States' Under-Secretary for Political Affairs, Bradford Morse, read a statement from the present Secretary-General, Dr. Kurt Waldheim, currently touring the Middle East.
