  • Description

United States Defence Secretary James Schlesinger on Tuesday (5 November) called on NATO to match the Warsaw Pact's growing wilitary strength.

Speaking at a news conference in Munster, West Germany, after watching West German troops on exercise there, Mr. Schlesinger warned the Atlantic Alliance against any tendency towards becoming a "military museum."
He said that America's allies should make their won efforts to strengthen the Alliance. Mr. Schlesinger said Washington was making better uses of its resources under current budget pressures by carrying out a plan to replace 18,000 support personnel in Europe with two new combat brigades.

The Soviet News Agency Tass later described as "regrettable" Mr. Schlesinger's plans for strengthening U.S. forces in West Cermany, claiming that the Defence Secretary cared nothing for international security.
