  • Description

HMAS Orion - an Oberon class submarine - was launched on Monday (16 September) in Greenock, Scotland by the wife of the Australian High Commissioner, Mrs. Joan Armstrong.

The submarine, the fifth of its class to join the Royal Australian Navy, is due to be commissioned in 1975. The first four submarines were ordered in January 1963 by the Minister for the Navy, to be built in British shipyards at a cost of GBP A5,000,000 each. A further order for two more was placed in October 1971 for delivery in 1975-76.

The submarines make up the 1st Submarine Squadron R.N.A., based at H.M.A.S. Platypus, Neutral Bay, Sydney. The first two, Oxley and Otway, are named after earlier R.A.N. submarines, Otama after the aboriginal word for dolphin, Onslow after the Western Australian town and Ovens after an explorer. Orion is named after the constellation.

HAMS Orion, which will be manned by a crew of 60, was built in the Cartsbury yard of the Scott-Lithgow group.
