  • Description

In Israel, hundreds of demonstrators broke through police cordons in the capital, Tel Aviv, on Monday night (11 November) in protest against rising prices and tough austerity measures announced by the Government on Sunday (10 November).

Youths in the low income suburb of Hatikva went on the rampage, smashing store windows, lighting bonfires on the pavements, and setting fire to a few stalls in the market. Squads of police made dozens of arrests in quelling the rioting and a number of scuffles developed.

Israel's Government headed by Premier Yitzhak Rabin is facing fierce protest from Opposition Parties and the Trade Unions over its draconian economic programme which has devalued the Israeli pound by forty three per cent and doubled the price of some essential commodities such as bread.
