    NEARLY 3,000 SCOUTS FROM MANY COUNTRIES GATHERED IN COLOMBO FEB 26 TO BEGIN A ONE-WEEK 'JAMBOREE'. THE CITY'S RACE-COURSE, GAILY DECORATED WITH FLAGS OF PARTICIPATING NATIONS, WAS PACKED WITH 4,000 SPECTATORS FOR THE OPENING CEREMONY OF THE JAMBOREE WHICH COINCIDED WITH THE GOLDEN JUBILEE OF THE SCOUT MOVEMENT IN CEYLON.

    THE FLAG CEREMONY, WHICH BEGAN THE PROCEEDINGS, WAS PRESIDED OVER BY MR SENANAYAKE, THE HOME MINISTER, ON BEHALF OF THE PRIME MINISTER, MRS BANDARANAIKE, WHO WAS ILL. AMONG OTHER LEADING OFFICIALS PRESENT WAS SIR OLIVER GOONATILAKE, THE CHIEF SCOUT OF CEYLON. IT WAS AT THE END OF THIS DAY THAT SIR OLIVER WAS RELIEVED OF HIS OFFICE AS GOVERNOR OF CEYLON.

    IN THE AFTERNOON, THE EXHIBITION, WHICH CONTAINED MUCH INTERESTING WORK BY THE SCOUTS, WAS OPENED BY MR MAHMUD, THE EDUCATION MINISTER.

    NEXT DAY, A LARGE PARADE OF SCOUTS MARCHED FROM THE JAMBOREE GROUNDS TO 'VIHARA PARK' WHERE A MONUMENT WAS UNVEILED BY THE MAYOR OF COLOMBO, MR M. MOHAMMED, TO COMMEMORATE THE GOLDEN JUBILEE.
