  • Description

INTRODUCTION Students held a demonstration in Paris on Thursday (3 March) to protest against budgetary restrictions which are endangering the future of one of the country's universities. It is a special school which is open to students without a baccalaureate, and entrance requirement for most universities.

SYNOPSIS: The National Union of Students in France organised the protest, a march on the Ministry of Education, with the help of a left-wing faction of the teachers unions. Students have been campaigning since the beginning of the year against the restrictions. They had several meetings with the Secretary of State for the Universities, but with little effect.

According to information compiled by the teachers, the universities are receiving less money this year than in 1971 -- and there are 140,000 more students. The big fear, however, is that 12,000 students without a baccalaureate won't now have access to a university. The number of people attending the school rose from 8,000 in 1968 to 30,000 in 1976 Students are also criticising the decrease in the number of grants, and the fact that those that have been issued do not meet the rising cost of living. They feel the financial cuts are responsible for the closures of many classes and departments.

It was a peaceful demonstration, but police formed a picket line at the end of the march. The protesters dispersed quietly. This is not the end of their protest, however. The students were planning to boycott classes and stage another march on the Ministry.
