  • Description

Before 500 guests, including King Olav, Crown Prince Harald and Princess Astrid, in Oslo University Hall, Norway, Dex Dec 10, British Labour Party Member of Parliament, Philip Noel-Baker received his gold medal and illuminated scroll as Nobel Peace Prize winner of 1959.

Nobel Peace Committee chairman, Gunnar Jahn, extolled Noel-Baker for 30 minutes. He said the British M.P. - the seventh Briton to win the Peace Prize - had for 45 years "dedicated his powers to the service of suffering humanity, whether in time of war or in the intervals between wars. But above all else his efforts to prevent war breaking out have been tireless and ceaseless." He possessed probably the world's greatest knowledge on the subject of disarmament.

In reply Noel-Baker said he valued the prize - worth GBP15,300 - more than anything in the world and "I would not change seats with any other person today."
He described how the Swedish chemist Alfred Nobel had hoped his terrible invention - dynamite - would make war impossible. "The history of our world might have taken a different course if the concerns of Krupps, Hugenberg, the Comite des Forges, and others had joined him with their resources in his work for peace."
Quoting US President Eisenhower, Noel-Baker said: "The world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its labourers, its genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."
Six other Nobel Prizes were awarded in Stockholm, Sweden, Dec 10, The recipients were: Professor Salvatore Quasimodo, Italy (Literature): Prof. Jaroslav Heyrovsky, Czechoslovakia (Chemistry): Profs. Severo Ochoa and Arthur Kornberg, USA (Medicine): and Profs. Emilio Segre and Owen Chamberlain, USA (Physics).
