Background: Large parts of San Sebastian, in Spain's Basque region, were without power on Wednesday (12 May), after an explosion damaged a sub-station which provides electricity for the area. This pylon, lying on its side, testified to the extent of the blast. A spokesman for the owners, Iberduero, said the damage would take some time to repair. Iberduero, Spain's largest private utility company, is building a nuclear plant at Lemoniz, near Bilbao. The project has been a target for attacks by the militant Basque separatist organisation ETA, which is opposed to nuclear energy. ETA has claimed responsibility for the murders of the plant's project manager, shot dead the previous week, and its chief engineer, killed over a year ago. According to Spanish police sources, ETA may be responsible for Wednesday's explosion in San Sebastian.
