Background: PRESIDENT KENNEDY IS NOW IN ITALY, CONTINUING HIS EUROPEAN TOUR.HE'D FLOWN THERE FROM GATWICK AIRPORT, ENGLAND, TODAY (SUNDAY) AFTER HIS TALKS WITH PRIME MINISTER MACMILLAN.

TWELVE HOURS OF INTENSIVE TALKS - AGREEING ON THE GENERAL LINE TO BE TAKEN ON THE NUCLEAR TEST BAN TALKS IN MOSCOW.A COMMUNIQUE SAID THE TWO STATESMEN BELIEVED THE ACHIEVEMENT OF A TREATY WOULD BE A MAJOR ADVANCE IN EAST-WEST RELATIONS.

THE QUESTION OF BRITAIN'S PARTICIPATION IN A MIXED-MANNED NATO POLARIS FLEET IS SHELVED FOR THE TIME BEING.MR.MACMILLAN WAS POSSIBLY REFERRING TO THIS WHEN HE SAID AT THE AIRPORT THAT THEY'D BOTH HAD "QUITE A HARD TIME" DURING THE TALKS.

AT THE AIRPORT, THE GUARD OF HONOUR THAT SAW HIS ARRIVAL EXACTLY TWENTY-THREE HOURS EARLIER WAS DRAWN UP.ONLY JOURNALISTS AND CAMERAMEN, AND THE OFFICIAL PARTY WHICH INCLUDED SOME OF THE MINISTERS WHO'D TAKEN PART IN THE TALKS, WERE THERE TO SEE THE PRESIDENT OFF.
