Background: SYNOPSIS: Adriaan Volker Huis, home of one of Europe's most important marine engineering groups and Holland's oldest firm of dredgers...

...where the city's Mayor or Burgomaster is on hand to meet an important guest.

It's His Excellency Mr. Rashad Nowilaty, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Mr. Nowilaty, accompanied by Mrs Nowilaty, has come specially to Rotterdam to take part in the naming ceremony of a new vessel destined for Saudi Arabia.

The ship is the first of three dredgers which the Adriaan Volker Group are supplying as part of the big contract for the construction of a new commercial port at Jubail in Saudi Arabia.

For many years, the Adriaan Volker Group has been actively engaged in extensive marine engineering schemes in the Middle East, Africa and Australia, as well as in Europe itself.

Accompanied by a group of distinguished guests from Saudi Arabia and from the Netherlands, Mr. and Mrs. Nowilaty arrive at a landing stage opposite the Adriaan Volker Huis...

Where they are joined by Mr. Nowilaty's daughter.

With the Dutch hosts and Saudi Arabian guests on board, the motor vessel Pieter Caland passes under the famous Maas Bridges. Rotterdam, situated at the mouth of the river Rhine, is the world's largest commercial port, and more than 33,000 sea-going vessels call here every year.

A modern and highly sophisticated distribution centre, Rotterdam has long been the home of some of Europe's most experienced and advanced marine engineers.

Watched by the assembled guests, Mrs Nowilaty is to unveil the name-plate of the new dredger...

It is the Sliedrecht 31, named after the village on the Rhine where the Adriaan Volker Group was started more than 120 years ago.

The ou???ex of the new dredger has been specially designed to tackle the hard cap rock under the sea in far-off Saudi Arabia.

By the end of 1976, the Sliedrecht 31 and two other similar vessels will be at work in Jubail.

Among the watchers admiring the lines of the new dredger is Mr. de Neef, the Chairman of the Board of the Adriaan Volker Group.

The long-planned commercial port of Jubail will of the greatest importance to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia...

...and the Sliedrecht 31 and her sister ships will play an essential role in the creation of this vital new facility.

On board the new dredger, the Saudi Arabian Ambassador leads the way up to the control-room on the bridge.

Here, he unveils a brass plaque placed there to commemorate the occasion.

The captain of the Sliedrecht demonstrates the operation of the controls...

...and the machinery is set in ration for the first time by Mr. Nowilaty.

The ceremony concludes with the presentation of gifts for the Saudi Arabian guest by the Managing Director of Adriaan Volker, Mr. J. C. Cosijn.
