  • Description

The Progress of Greece towards joining the European Economic Community gained impetus from the current visit of Greek Premier Constantine Karamanlis to Bonn this week.

Yesterday (May 16), Mr. Karamanlis had a two hour meeting with West German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, with the Common Market expected to be high on the agenda. Even before the meeting, West German experts had been saying that moves to speed up Greek membership of the Common Market would receive a sympathetic hearing.

But this could depend on progress in Greece towards democracy, and on the resolution of the confrontation with Turkey over Cyprus. Greece became an associate member of the Community the first in 1961.

The Bonn talks yesterday also covered Greek requests for capital aid and for more arms deliveries.

Greek Foreign Minister Dimitrios Bitsios, accompanying Mr. Karamanlis, was also involved in lengthy talks yesterday with his West German counterpart, Herr Hans-Dietrich Genscher.
