  • Description

After a day of announcement and denials, the Air Force confirmed Wednesday (24 July) it had spent "somewhat less than $5,000" to prepare a seven-room suite at Otis Air Force Base, near President Kennedy's summer home at Hyannis Port on Cape Cod, Massachusetts (American East Coast), for a possible emergency delivery of Mrs. Kennedy's third child.

Pierre Salinger, White House press secretary, said the project is precautionary only and the First Lady still plans to have the child at the Army's Walter Reed Hospital in Washington in August.

Newsmen who looked at the Otis Air Force Base quarters said they were not particularly sumptuous. The quarters, which have been used by transient officers, have been equipped or Mrs. Kennedy with air conditioning, an electric dishwasher, a garbage-disposal unit, new carpeting, and the walls were cleaned. There's an incubator and baby scales and a guest room for the President if he wants to stay over.
