  • Description

The trial of 83 people--among them 69 former junior military officers--accused of involvement in an organisation aimed at establishing a proletarian dictatorship in Turkey is continuing. When proceedings opened earlier this month, the prosecutor called for the death penalty for 41 of the accused.

The trial, involving 25 defence lawyers, is one of a series now reaching the military courts following a wave of anti-Government terrorism which toppled Prime Minister Suleyman Demirel's Government last March and led to the declaration of martial law in II of Turkey's 67 provinces. After large scale detention of political activists of both left and right, and estimated 500 people are awaiting trial on charges arising from political activities or violation of martial law regulations.

The 83 appearing in the miliary court at the present time are charged under section 146 of the Turkish criminal code, covering acts against the established constitutional form of Government. The article is used in Turkey primarily in cases against Communists or Marxists. The Communist Party is banned under the Turkish constitution.
