Background: Cue material...The funeral has taken place of the three catholic missionaries who were shot dead on a lonely road last sunday when they were out for a drive. Ian Smith reports on the specultian and implications of the event.......
SYNOPSIS: The deaths of the three missionaries has had considerable political repercussions here. If they were killed by a guerrilla then it sullies the entire liberation campaign. If they were killed by a Rhodes in army under over squad then it confirms the ??? fears of the black population. Sof "I bless the body of Bishop schitt ??? Possenti and Sister Francis"
The mourners heard the Bishops described as a man a prayer but also a fighter in matters of principle. And it is this principled opposition to the regime here in Rhodesia by the Catholic Church that has given rise to the accusation that Bishop Schmitt and Father Possenti and Sister Frances were murdered by a Rhodesian undercover squad.
Only last month the Bishop had written critical the white government for what he said was flittering away the goodwill of the black ??? without any hope of reconciliation. We Bi??? he added have time and again opposed the government and it racialist policies.
There is no conclusive evidence who shot the missionaries..... but the speed with which both sides draw conclusions that it was the ??? is proof of how far apart they still are.
The Catholic Church here is a committed church Among the priest Bishop Lament of Umtali who is currently appealing a ten year sentence for failing to report the presence of guerrillas.
Thus it would seem a foolish move for the guerre movement to kill missionaries when they support African rights so strongly. Meanwhile the Prime minister Ian Smith has emphatically reject the accusation it was the Rhodesian Soleus sco??? who did it.
The mission itself today was almost deserted practically everyone had gone to the funeral. Just the cattle were being tended by herds en??? stayed behind. The sun shining brightly on the church's silver ???of, and on the/??? there mis??? at their deaths the re??? clear and empty ??? the three is on??? imagined be the Sunday they were murdered.
