  • Description

Greek-Cypriot leader, Glafkos Clerides and Turkish-Cypriot leader, Rauf Danktash met in Nicosia on Wednesday (6 November) to discuss plans to find people who went missing or were displaced during the Cyprus crisis.

The two leaders met on Nicosia's "green line" with the United Nations special representative in Cyprus, Mr. Luis Weckmann-Munoz and representatives of the International Red Cross Committee and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees.

It was their first WP on intercommunal affairs since the United Nations General Assembly resolution on Cyprus on Friday (1 November) which urged a withdrawal of foreign troops and a return of refugees to their homes.

Greek-Cypriots claim more than 3,000 people are missing and the Turkish-Cypriots are looking for several hundred missing in the south of the island.

An official statement after the talks in the Ledra Palace Hotel -- now a United Nations command post -- said the two leaders also examined increased assistance to the aged and the infirm on both sides of the line, food supplies and the re-opening of schools belonging to both communities in the north and south.

The negotiators agreed to meet again on Monday (11 November) at the Ledra Palace.
