  • Description

Beirut's latest ceasefire agreement was shaky, but still holding on Monday (3 November) as the Lebanese National Dialogue Committee met to discuss ways of cementing the truce.

AS they met, Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) commandos who have backed left-wing Moslem forces throughout the bitter factional fighting, showed their good faith by supplying good for 150 Jewish people stranded in the strife-tron city.

Members of the Dialogue Committee, which includes top Lebanese politicians and representatives of both the left and right-wing factions, met under tight security.

Several delegate arrived sealed in armoured cars heavily armed escorts.

Right-wing Christian Falangist forces are still clinging to their stronghold in Beirut's Holiday In Hotel.. in the belief that the ceasefire will not last long.

However, Prime Minister Rashid Karami said on Monday that the warring guerrilla armies were co-operating to bring life back to normal following the almost continual conflict has cost just on a thousand lives in the past two months.

The organisation of food supplies for the Jews stranded in the Wadi Abu Jamil quarter was personally handled by PLO leader, Yasser Arafat.

When told of their Plight, he ordered that a truck-load of goods be taken in and the truck was there an hour later.

Reporters who visited the synagogue found the Jewish people in high spirits laughing and joking besides big cartons of cheese, bread and luncheon meat.

Newsmen quoted the Jews as saying, "It was good of the Fedayeen (Guerrillas) to help us. They were the only ones who did."
