Background: Demonstrators, many in mourning and preceeded by a black flag, protested silently in Brussels yesterday (Saturday) to focus attention on injustices committed against former Belgian colonists of the Congo.

The demonstration was organised by the Belgian Association of African Interests (ABIA). Members were protesting that the recent official visit to Belgium of the Congo-Kinshasa President, General Mobutu, had done nothing to alleviate financial injustices.

These injustices, they claimed, fell most heavily on small investors and enterprises in the former Belgian Congo. In 95 per cent of these cases, no compensation had been paid during a period of more than 10 years. And at least 70 per cent of the victims of decolonisation were too old to build a new life for themselves.

The protestors demanded that Belgium should cease giving aid to African countries which did not respect Belgian investments.

Many of the demonstrators wore mourning in memory of relatives who had died in the Congo.
