  • Description

The inaugural ski-jump competition at Lake Placid in the United States has been won by Chris McNeill of Polaris, Montana.

SYNOPSIS: Lake placid is the site for the 1980 inter Olympics and the 70 metre jump was built for that occasion.

John Broman - a 19 year-old from Duluth in Minnesota, with the jump that took him into third place on this day's contest.

Walter Malmquist, a member of the United State' Nordic team in the 1976 Olympics jumping into second place.

But it was Chris McNeill who carried the day with a jump of 82 metres.

Most of the jumpers were full of praise for the new jump, although the building of the towers has come in for criticism from environmentalists who claim it mars the natural beauty of the Adirondack Mountains.
