  • Description

Britain's veteran yachtsman, Sir Francis Chichester, is now well out into the Atlantic but behind schedule in his attempt to break a solo voyage record by sailing the 4,000 miles (6,400 km) from Portuguese Guinea in West Africa to Nicaragua in Central America in 20 days.

Sir Francis, who will be 70 this year, achieved several notable flying records in the 1920s and 1930s. More recently he has confined his record attempts to yachting and won international fame when he sailed single-handed round the world.

His present voyage has met with bad luck so far. His yacht Gipsy Moth Five had to be re paired before he could set out from Bissau in Portuguese Guinea and unusually calm conditions on his first day at sea allowed him to cover only 84 miles - 120 less than he needs to average.

After five days he was still behind schedule and was not optimistic about his chances when contacted by radio telephone. "It's a very poor start," he commented. But he added that the Gipsy Moth was "sailing along merrily now".

He has just under two weeks to make up for the lost time.
