  • Description

CHEMISTS AT THE SOUTHWESTERN RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN LOUISIANA HAVE DEVELOPED A GASOLINE BRICK.

GASOLINE IS COMBINED WITH INEXPENSIVE CHEMICALS AND THEN PROCESSED. THE RESULT IS A BRICK. THE BRICK CAN BE STORED AND HANDLED WITH EASE. WHEN THE USER SQUEEZES IT, HOWEVER, GASOLINE POURS OUT.

THE SOVIET UNION DEVELOPED A SIMILAR PROCESS SOME TIME AGO, BUT IN THE RUSSIAN EXPERIMENTS, ONLY 75 PER CENT OF THE GASOLINE TURNED INTO SOLID FORM WAS RECOVERABLE. IN THE AMERICAN PROCESS, 96 PER CENT OF THE GASOLINE TURNED INTO BRICKS IS RECOVERABLE.

BRICKS OF GASOLINE ARE EXPECTED TO PROVE A RAPID, SIMPLE METHOD OF GASOLINE SUPPLY. LARGE TANKS, PIPING, AND OTHER STRUCTURES ASSOCIATED WITH THE HANDLING OF INFLAMMABLE LIQUIDS ARE UNNECESSARY. THE BRICKS CAN BE STORED AND HANDLED MUCH LIKE COMMON BUILDING BRICKS.

SCIENTISTS FORESEE A DAY WHEN GASOLINE CAN BE PURCHASED AT A SUPERMARKET ALONG WITH THE FAMILY GROCERIES.
