Background: THE OLYMPIC FLAME WAS KINDLED THIS WEEK ON A TOLTEC PYRAMID, 25 MILES (40 KMS) NORTH EAST OF MEXICO CITY, DURING A REHEARSAL FOR TONIGHT'S (FRIDAY'S) CEREMONY. THE FLAME WILL BE BROUGHT TO THE CAPITAL FOR THE OPENING OF THE 19TH OLYMPIAD TOMORROW (SATURDAY).

TEOTIHUACAN, SCENE OF MANY FAMOUS ARCHEOLOGICAL SITES, WAS THE SCENE OF A COLOURFUL PAGEANT AND DISPLAY BY AZTEC DANCERS BEFORE THE OLYMPIC TORCH ARRIVED.

TO THE AZTECS THIS CEREMONY REPRODUCED THE FESTIVITY OF THE NEW FIRE, A MOST IMPORTANT CEREMONY OF THE RELIGIOUS AND CIVIC RITUAL OF THE ANCIENT AZTECS.

THE SPECTACULAR PAGEANT WAS DESIGNED TO REVIVE THIS ANCIENT CEREMONY FOR THE ENJOYMENT OF OLYMPIC GAMES VISITORS. IT WAS PERFORMED IN THE PLAZA DE LA LUNA BY MORE THAN 1000 DANCERS.

THE SPECTACLE BEGAN AT SUNDOWN AND ENDED AT NIGHT WITH THE ARRIVAL OF THE OLYMPIC TORCH. THE NEW FIRE WAS LIGHTED ON THE PYRAMID OF THE MOON WHICH WAS COMPLETELY ILLUMINATED.

SPECTATORS WERE PLACED AROUND THE SIDES OF THE PLAZA DE LA LUNA AND ALONG THE AVENUE OF THE DEAD GIVING THEM A PANORAMIC VIEW OF THE PAGEANT.

ACCORDINGLY TO MYTHOLOGY, THE AZTECS DIVIDED TIME INTO 52 YEAR CYCLES AND THE CEREMONY ONLY TOOK PLACE AT THE END OF ONE OF THESE CYCLES AND AT THE START OF A NEW ONE TO PAY HOMAGE TO THEIR GODS.
