  • Description

THE MAY DAY CELEBRATIONS WERE COMMEMORATED IN DAKAR ON THURSDAY (1 MAY) BY THE TRADITIONAL WORKERS' MARCH THROUGH THE CITY PRECEDED BY A POPULAR MEETING OF REPRESENTATIVES OF ALL THE MAJOR UNIONS.

THE MARCH, WHICH STARTED AT 9 A.M. AT THE CHAMP DE COURSES, MADE ITS WAY DOWN THE BOULEVARD GENERAL DE GAULLE AND THROUGH SEVERAL MAJOR STREETS TO DISBAND AT THE BOURSE DE TRAVAIL (WORKERS' EXCHANGE).

EACH SECTION OF THE MARCH WAS IDENTIFIED BY THE BANNERS OF THE DIFFERENT UNIONS, WHO WERE TAKING THE OPPORTUNITY OF STRESSING THEIR DEMANDS FOR BETTER WORKING CONDITIONS AND HIGHER SALARIES; A FREEZING OF PRICES AND TAXES, PARTICULARLY ON FOODSTUFFS; A BETTER POLICY TO FIGHT THE PROBLEM OF UNEMPLOYMENT; AND THE CREATING OF STATE INDUSTRIES AND ENTERPRISES TO EMPLOY THE YOUTH OF SENEGAL.

THE SENEGAL MARCH WAS ONLY ONE OF THE HUNDREDS OF SIMILAR DEMONSTRATIONS WHICH TOOK PLACE AROUND THE WORLD ON MAY DAY. MILLIONS OF WORKERS CELEBRATED THEIR TRADITIONAL DAY - SOME BY STRIKING, OTHERS BY MARCHING AND RALLYING. OTHERS STILL WITH MILITARY DISPLAYS. ON THE WHOLE MOST OF THE CELEBRATIONS WERE MORE SUBDUED AND PRODUCED LESS INCIDENTS THAN HAD BEEN EXPECTED.

IN DAKAR, THERE WERE NO OFFICIAL MEETINGS BETWEEN THE DEMONSTRATORS AND GOVERNMENT REPRESENTATIVES - MAINLY BECAUSE OF THE STRICT SECURITY MEASURES IMPOSED BY THE GOVERNMENT TO AVOID ANY CLASHES. THE UNION CLAIM WERE LATER DELIVERED TO THE MINISTRY OF LABOUR BY MEMBERS OF THE NATIONAL BUREAU OF THE WORKERS' UNION.
