MULEI: "All COTU wants is that anyone taking up employment outside Kenya, including Saudi Arabia, must be assured of his rights according to both Kenya and international standards. These assurances, COTU demands, should include assurances that those workers will receive favourable treatments in line with Kenya's laws and ratified ILO conventions governing the importation of foreign labour."

REPORTER: "Is it your intention now then to go ahead, your organisation to go ahead and right to a protest at the ILO conference in Geneva."

MULEI: Yes that is true. I've talked to the Chief Executive of this organisation and he's currently in ??? and waiting to discuss this issue at the ILO conference.

It is a coincidence that the issue of migrant workers is also being discussed there, affecting Libya, Egypt, Pakistan and India. Our clear issue came in the way of this issue so we feel that if this cannot be rectified, we have the right to raise this issue in Geneva."

Background: Kenya's Central Organisation of Trade Unions, COTU, is concerned at the conditions being offered to Kenyans recruited for work is Saudi Arabia. COTU'S acting secretary-general, Justus Mulei, told a news conference in Nairobi on Monday (6 June) that his organisation will raise the issue at an International Labour Organisation conference in Geneva later this month.

MR Mulei was speaking after allegations that Kenyans are being offered "slavery" terms and conditions. So far an estimated 400 people have been recruited and COTU is concerned because Saudi Arabia has no trade unions to protect the workers.
