  • Description

On the Malaysian-Thai border government forces from both countries have been involved in three major combined operations against Communist guerrillas. Last week top-level representatives from the two countries met to plan fresh actions against the Communists in the jungle of southern Thailand.

SYNOPSIS: The meeting took place in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, and was hosted by Home Minister Ghazali Shafie, seen here greeting delegates.

This was the first time this year the two South-East Asian neighbouring states had come together to discuss their combined efforts against the guerrillas, who are reported to number about 3,000. A joint communique issued after the meeting said "the combined operations against the Communist terrorists are to be continued and intensified". The Thai delegation was led by Defence Minister General Lek Naeomalee.

Mr. Ghazali told the meeting the military actions had kept the guerrillas "on the run" and the local people had rallied their support and were organised to protect themselves. General Lek also spoke at the meeting.
