    THE TOKYO MARU, THE WORLD'S LARGEST OIL TANKER - 150,000 TONS - SAILED FROM YOKOHAMA ON TUESDAY (1 FEBRUARY) FOR HER MAIDEN COMMERCIAL VOYAGE TOT EH PERSIAN GULF.

    IT TOOK ONLY 150 DAYS TO BUILD THE TOKYO MARU FOR ITS LAUNCHING LAST SEPTEMBER (1965) AT THE ISHIKAWAJIMA SHIPYARD.

    THE TOKYO MARU COST NEARLY 4 1/2 MILLION STERLING TO BUILD; IS MORE THAN 1,000 FEET (306 METRES) LONG; 154 FEET (47 1/2 METRES) WIDE; AND NEARLY 80 FEET (24 METRES) TALL.

    HER CAPACITY IS ALMOST NINE MILLION - 260 - THOUSAND DRUMS - EACH DRUM CONTAINING 50 GALLONS (200 LITRES) AND SHE WILL PLY REGULARLY BETWEEN JAPAN AND THE PERSIAN GULF.

    BUT, TOKYO MARU WILL NOT BE HOLDING THE WORLD RECORD TITLE FOR LONG. ALREADY THE ISHIKAWAJIMA SHIPYARD IS GEARED TO BUILD A BIGGER TANKER STILL - THE 205,000 TON IDEMITSU MARUM, DUE TO BE COMPLETED NEST AUGUST.
