    TODAY, (MONDAY), THE LABORATORY WAS THROWN OPEN TO THE PUBLIC AND IT GAVE THE MAN-IN-THE-STREET AND THE EXPERT ALIKE AN OPPORTUNITY TO SEE WHAT'S BEEN DONE OVER THE PAST 12 MONTHS IN THE PROBLEMS OF ROAD DESIGN, LIGHTING, VEHICLE DESIGN AND THE PSYCHOLOGY OF ROAD BEHAVIOUR.

    WHILE MUCH OF THE WORK AT THE LABORATORY IS THEORETICAL, THERE'S A TEST TRACK ON WHICH MANY OF THE NEW IDEAS EVOLVED BY SCIENTISTS AT THE ESTABLISHMENT ARE TRIED OUT... AND SOME ARE PRETTY SPECTACULAR.

    SPEED IS SAID BY THE AUTHORITIES ON ROAD SAFETY TO BE A PRIME CAUSE OF ROAD ACCIDENTS. A PART OF THE WORK BEING CARRIED OUT AT THE LABORATORY IS INVOLVED WITH SPEED, AND MORE SPECIFICALLY WITH THE BREAKING ABILITY OF VEHICLES AT SPEED. THE GREATER THE SPEED THE GREATER THE DISTANCE REQUIRED TO STOP, AND THIS APPLIES WHEN THE ROAD IS WET -- IF YOU CAN'T STOP, THEN A LAMP POST BECOMES AN EFFECTIVE BREAKING INSTRUMENT.

    OTHER DEMONSTRATIONS INCLUDED AN ANTI-LOCKING DEVICE FOR A MOTOR-CYCLE THAT'S USED, IN TRIALS, WITH AN OUT-RIGGER ??? DESIGNED TO SAFEGUARD THE RIDER FROM FALLS DURING TRIALS.

    THE ERA OF THE MOTORWAY IS WITH US AND ANOTHER PROBLEM IS THE COLLISIONS WHICH OCCUR IN SUPER HIGHWAYS WHEN A VEHICLE LEAVES A CARRIAGEWAY, CROSSES THE RESERVE AND MEETS ANOTHER CAR HEAD ON. TO PREVENT ACCIDENTS OF THIS NATURE, A NEW SAFETY DEVICE HAS BEEN DESIGNED - ONE WHICH DEFLECTS THE VEHICLE, REDUCES THE SPEED ALLOWING THE DRIVER TO REGAINS CONTROL.

    THE MOST DRAMATIC DEMONSTRATION ALSO INVOLVES BREAKING AT SPEED. A CAR RACES AROUND THE TRACK AT 100 MILES AN HOUR AND STOPS.
