    MR. C. R. MCKERIHAN, TREASURER OF THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE FOR WORLD REFUGEE YEAR, ON MARCH 25, LAID THE FOUNDATION STONE OF THE WONG TAI SIN INFIRMARY HOSPITAL IN HONG KONG.

    THE PROPOSED NINE-HUNDRED BED HOSPITAL, COSTING SOME ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-FIVE THOUSAND AUSTRALIAN POUNDS, WAS DONATED BY AUSTRALIANS.

    THE MONEY HAS BEEN PASSED TO THE BOARD OF THE CHINESE TUNG WAH GROUP OF HOSPITALS AND WORK ON THE FIVE-STORY BUILDING IS IN PROGRESS AND WILL BE COMPLETED IN A FEW MONTHS TIME.

    THE HOSPITAL WILL HELP TO ALLEVIATE THE BRITISH COLONY'S HOSPITAL BED SHORTAGE - AT PRESENT THERE IS FEWER THAN ONE BED FOR EVERY TWENTY-THREE THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED OF THE THREE AND HALF MILLION POPULATION.

    THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME THE COMMITTEE HAD PROVIDED A CASH DONATION FOR A HOSPITAL PROJECT IN DENSELY-POPULATED HONG KONG.

    MR. MCKERIHAN TOLD A CROWD OF DIGNITARIES WHO WERE PRESENT AT THE CEREMONY THAT HONG KONG IS BETTER ADMINISTERED THAN MANY OTHER COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD
    HE TOLD THEM THAT UP TO 1959, AUSTRALIA HAD CONTRIBUTED ALMOST FOUR MILLION AUSTRALIAN POUNDS TOWARDS REFUGEE RELIEF BUT EVEN A BETTER CONTRIBUTION THAN THAT WAS HER TAKING OF TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTY-FOUR THOUSAND REFUGEES FROM EUROPE.
