  • Description

FLOODS AND STRONG WINDS BROUGHT HAVOC TO LARGE AREAS OF ITALY AFTER THREE DAYS OF TORRENTIAL RAINS. MANY RIVERS BURST THEIR BANKS, FLOODING TOWNS AND VILLAGES AND ISOLATING PEOPLE IN THEIR HOMES. THE RIVER ARNO WHICH DEVASTATED FLORENCE IN 1966 BURST IT BANKS AGAIN AND DEVASTATED LARGE AREAS 40 MILES (64 KILOMETRES) SOUTH OF THE CITY, BUT YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) THE LEVEL OF THE RIVER SUBSIDED BELOW THE DANGER POINT FOR FLORENCE.

THREE PEOPLE DIED ON WEDNESDAY WHEN THEIR HOUSE COLLAPSED IN SOUTH-CENTRAL ITALY. IN VENICE, HIGH TIDES SWEPT OVER ST. MARKS SQUARE, BUT SHOPKEEPERS WARNED IN ADVANCE HAD MOVED THEIR GOODS TO SAFETY. SOUTHERN ITALY WAS ALSO AFFECTED, AND ONE OF THE WORST HIT AREAS WAS CASERTA NORTH OF NAPLES.

PEOPLE OF FLORENCE FLOCKED TO THE BANKS TO THE ARNO AND ITS BRIDGES TO WATCH THE WATER LEVEL. BUT THE RAINS STOPPED YESTERDAY AND THE RIVER, WHICH HAD RISEN SIX FEET (TWO METRES) ABOVE THE DANGER LEVEL, RECEDED.

(ON 4 NOVEMBER 1966 FLOODS SWEPT THROUGH FLORENCE DEVASTATING ITS ART TREASURES, DROWNING 17 PEOPLE, LEAVING 45,000 HOMELESS AND WRECKING 18,000 SHOPS.)
