  • Description

The newly-formed Laotian Joint Political Council -- a product of the peace agreement between Prince Souvanna Phouma's Government and the pro-communist Pathet Lao -- met on Friday (26 April) for the first time at the royal Laotian capital of Luang Parabang.

The Council's Chairman is the Pathet Lao leader, Prince Souvanouvong. Its main task is to prepare the country for General Elections.

Prince Souvanouvong inspected a guard of honour outside the Council Hall. Inside, he sat with Prince Souvanna Phouma, who still heads the Laotian interim Government.

In the Hall, he told the 42-member Council that, although deep differences still existed in Laos, they now had a unique opportunity to seek their own solutions without foreign interference.

Outside, despite the heavy rain, students demonstrated in favour of the Pathet Lao. Prince Souvanouvong spoke to them and urged restraint at this important time in the nation's history.
